Funchal ITU Paratriathlon World Cup
Arriving at the end of the weekend of international competitions in Madeira, on Sunday, October 20th, we had about 66 athletes from 25 different nationalities, with physical and visual limitations, competing for the last qualification for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The Paratriathlon World Cup was held at the sprint triathlon, with 750m of swimming, 20km of cycling and 5km of running. This race is performed in several categories, grouping the athletes in six Sport Classes: PTWC, PTS2, PTS3, PTS4, PTS5 and PTVI.
In PTS2 category, athletes with a severe degree of limitation of physical activity, first female was American athlete Melissa Stockwell with a total time 1:25:43, first male was Great Britain athlete Andrew Lewis, with a total time of 1:13:55. In second place were Veronica Yoko Plebani (Italy) and Stuart Meikle (Great Britain). In third place in the women’s PTS2 category was the French athlete Cécile Saboureau and the Italian male athlete Gianluca Valori.
In PTS3 category, athletes with a significant degree of limitation of physical activity, reached the first place the male athlete from Spain, Daniel Molina, with a total time of 1:10:04. In second place was Dutchman Nico Van Der Burgt and in third place was Michael Herter of France. In this category no female athlete has entered the race.
In PTS4 category, athletes with a moderate degree of limitation of physical activity, taking first place the American athlete Kelly Elmlinger, with 01:17:16 and the Russian athlete Mikhail Kolmakov, with 01:05:12. In second place were Svetlana Karama (Russia) and Jorge Luis Fonseca (Brazil). In third place was Sebastian Engwald Jensen from Denmark.
In PTS5 category, athletes with a slight degree of physical activity limitation, completing the first place the French female athlete Gwladys Lemoussu, with a total time of 1:14:43 and the Brazilian male athlete Carlos Rafael Viana, with a time total of 1:00:25. Second place went to the podium Anna Bychkova (Russia) and Guenther Matzinger (Austria). In third place was Petra Lévay from Hungary and Ronan Cordeiro from Brazil.
In PTVI category, athletes with visual limitations, total or partial, who complete races with a guide, until crossing the finish line. First came Annouck Curzillat from France with a total time of 1:14:04 and Dave Ellis from Britain with a total time of 01:04:28. In second place was Ksenia Vibornykh from Russia and Antoine Perel from France. In third place were podium Lena Dieter from Germany and Lazar Filipovic from Serbia.
In the last category starting, PTWC, wheelchair athletes, complete the wheelchair cycling and race course. Spanish athlete Eva María Moral Pedrero completed the race in first place with a total time of 1:18:09 and Austrian male athlete Florian Brungraber completed the race at 1:05:38. In second place were Jessica Ferreira from Brazil and Benjamin Lenatz from Germany. In third place were Christiane Reppe from Germany and Pier Alberto Buccoliero from Italy.
